Bottomley

William Lawrence Bottomley

After a first introduction to the work of William Lawrence Bottomley, it may come as a surprise to a budding Virginia architecture enthusiast – given that close to half of his commissions were in the Richmond area – to learn that the society architect was a lifelong New Yorker, with offices on the Upper East Side.  After attending Columbia University, in 1906 (only a few years before my grandfather would begin school there), he studied at the American Academy in Rome as well as Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, and traveled extensively in Italy, France, and Spain.

Largely credited as a classicist, Bottomley is best known for his Colonial Revival residences, in Virginia, New York, and several others.  Eleven of his commissions (8 in Virginia) are currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and he is generally regarded as one of the most acclaimed American architects of the 20th century.

Born and based in Boston, the influential architect and city planner Arthur Asahel Shurcliff’s list of commission credits includes the co-founding of America’s first 4-year landscape architecture school (at Harvard University), Old Sturbridge Village, the Charles River Esplanade, and pinnacles with Colonial Williamsburg.  Shortly after completing the latter, he was called upon to collaborate with Lawrence Bottomley to design the grounds at the Waverley Hill Estate, where his work continues to be a popular bucket list item for garden enthusiasts throughout the state of Virginia.
